During the initial stages of my graduation project titled Siapa Aku (Who Am I)?, I conducted an ethnographic study of the people who used to live on Singapore’s southern islands at West Coast Park. West Coast Park is known to be the final and only enclave of the Orang Pulau. To encapsulate the project’s stakeholders clearer, I recreated and crafted the bubu fishing tool in acrylic form with laser-engravings. Bubu-making is a maritime craft widely practiced by the Southern islander fishermen, long before the 1970s.
